
A standout four-year boys tennis career for York senior Chris Vargo came to a close on May 28 at the IHSA state tournament.
Vargo, a four-time state qualifier, competed for the second season at singles and went 1-2 at the tournament.
He beat Amish Dudeja of Downers Grove South in the first round 7-5, 6-4, but fell in his next two matches. He lost to Ian Hinkamper of Quincy Notre Dame 6-3, 6-3 in the second round and then was knocked out with a tough 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 loss to Kamil Cwikla of Lincoln-Way East.
The Dukes will lose one other senior from their state roster in doubles player Mike Scinto. He and junior Jack Parr suffered two close losses on Thursday. The duo fell in the first round to Bowen Tretheway and Michael Arenson of Latin 7-5, 6-2 and were knocked out after a 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-1 loss to Fred Tye and Konrad Ryba of Glenbrook South.
The other three York players at state also will return next season. Junior Mark Nosek, making his third state appearance, won one match. After a loss in the first round, Nosek beat Cory Colnon of St. Ignatius 6-2, 6-3, but was eliminated after a close 6-4, 7-5 loss to Danny Greenhill of Highland Park.
The Dukes’ other junior duo of Chris Delgado and Nate Ahlgrim came close in their two state matches. They fell 7-5, 6-3 to Michael Brummer and Nick Weber of Teutopolis in the first round and then suffered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss to Matthew Burns and Josh Burns of Normal.
