ELMHURST, IL -

The chilly and damp conditions didn’t seem conducive to low golf scores.

For Andrew Woodhull the conditions were perfect.

The Timothy Christian senior shot a 1-under par 70 to set the pace at Tuesday’s Class 1A boys golf regional at Glendale Lakes Golf Club.

His score was the best by three strokes and ensured his berth at Monday’s Byron sectional at Prairie View Golf Course, but Woodhull was hoping for more.

“It’s OK,” Woodhull said of his score. “I could have hit the ball off the tee better. I was wild with my driver.”

Having previously shot a 34 on the front nine earlier this season, Woodhull went 35-35 for his 70, overcoming a bogey-birdie-bogey stretch to get back under par by the end of his round and advance to a second straight sectional.

“My iron play was pretty good and my putting was good,” he said. “I had mostly pars with a couple of tap in birdies.”

Unfortunately for TC, Woodhull’s score didn’t lead to a team spot in the sectional as the Trojans finished third with a 340.

Thomas Huiner and Trevor Gorman carded 89s and Dave Van Reken a 92 to round out the scoring for the Trojans. Mike Hennel fired a 93 and Kyle Venhousen a 104.

A pair of fellow Elmhurst golfers will join Woodhull at Byron next week as Immaculate Conception golfers Pat Haggerty and Tom Hart advanced individually for the Knights.

Haggerty’s 78 was safely below the cut, while Hart had to hold his breath until learning his 82 landed on the cut line.

“I peaked at the right time,” said Haggerty, whose score paced the Knights to fourth place overall. “I started playing better as the season went on.”

The sophomore admitted to a case of the shakes early in his round, but made the turn at 2-over par after eight pars and a double bogey. He pared the first three holes.

“The first couple holes I was feeling pressure and trying to get in the flow,” Haggerty said. “When I pared the first three I knew it could be a good day.”

Haggerty, a first-time sectional qualifier, will take some pointers from Hart, a senior who was a sectional qualifier last year.

“He was there last year so I’ll look to him to show me how it’s done,” Haggerty said.

Haggerty and Hart led the way for the Knights, who finished fifth in the team standings with a 354. Chris Cheng scored an 88 and Matt Gaughan a 106 to flesh out the team scoring, while Nick Panicola fired a 111 and Brandon a 118.
