York senior guard Charlie Rose was one of two Dukes to be named to the all-tournament team at Palatine’s Ed Molitor Thanksgiving Classic. Rose and the Dukes went 4-0 to win the tournament for the second year in a row. Rose, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the start of the season.
Montini made its fifth straight state title appearance, but IC Catholic and Willowbrook also made the playoffs. Those three teams plus York, Glenbard East and Addison Trail comprise the 2013 Suburban Life East DuPage all-area football team.
PALATINE – York boys basketball has a new identity this year, and players like Stanley Roberts are a part of the Dukes’ evolution. Without star guard David Cohn, who graduated, the Dukes are using a more balanced offense, and the early returns are good.
York varsity girls basketball hosts Hinsdale Central in Elmhurst on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013. Hinsdale hosts Benet Academy on Thursday, Dec. 5.
IC Catholic’s boys basketball team made it to the championship game of the Westminster Thanksgiving tournament, but lost to St. Edward 60-57. The same two teams met in the final of the same tournament a year ago, and the Green Wave won that game, as well.
The U17 Elite Black girls team from United Soccer Academy in Oak Brook competed in the annual premier Midwest SLSG Girls Fall Classic and College Showcase in St. Louis in early November.
Three individuals and two relays represented York at the state preliminaries on Friday at New Trier. None of the entries advanced to Saturday’s finals. Senior Hannah Nolte closed out her swimming career with a 43rd place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and was a part of both relays.
Both IC Catholic and Timothy Christian lost their leading scorer from a year ago, but both teams have key starters back as well. The Knights are gunning for a third straight conference title.
ELMHURST – How do you replace a star point guard like David Cohn? You don’t. At least that’s what York coach Vince Doran is saying. Frank Toohey leads a York team hoping to succeed without their former star guard.
ROCK ISLAND – Augustana senior middle linebacker Erik Westerberg, a York graduate, has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2013 Gagliardi Trophy, the top individual honor awarded in NCAA Division III football. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 18, two days prior to the NCAA Division III Championship game in Salem, Va.
IC Catholic senior outside hitter Rory Manion was one of three seniors to lead the Knights to a Class 2A state title in girls volleyball last weekend. Manion, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about winning state and the unusual trip home the Knights experienced.
ELMHURST – Most basketball teams don’t expect big improvement after losing their leading scorer, but York does this season as it returns all but one player from last season. AnnaBell Lansdowne is the only starter that doesn’t return from last year's 17-12 team and the resulting depth is causing coach John Constable the good kind of problem.
ELMHURST – Monday was the first day girls basketball teams in the state could play their first games. Timothy Christian tipped off Tuesday while IC Catholic will play its first game Friday. The Knights feature a number of returners while the Trojans have a new-look team.
NORMAL – Delaney D’Amore ended the season for IC Catholic the way she could only dream. The Knights’ senior outside hitter returned a serve and received a set from Kimmy Martino. She smacked the ball just out of the reach of an Edwards County player to clinch the Class 2A state title on Saturday.
DOWNERS GROVE – Three individuals and two relays from York’s girls swimming and diving team qualified for state out of the Downers Grove North sectional on Saturday. The Dukes were third as a team at the sectional.
