The Elmhurst man who broke his neck in a fall while hiking at Starved Rock State Park was not paralyzed in the accident and is now recovering at home, his family said.
"They say he is very, very lucky," said his mother, Linda Wangler. "At first they told him that he was most likely paralyzed."
Michael A. Wangler, 23, was hiking Aug. 30 in a restricted area of Sac Canyon with two friends in Starved Rock when he slipped and fell.
Wangler broke the fifth vertebrae in his neck, and his right arm.
He was released from the hospital Saturday morning and is currently in a brace used to keep his neck from moving, she said.
Wangler and the two others hiking with him were cited on the complaint of entering a restricted area.
Starved Rock is about 94 miles southwest of Chicago.
