WHAT’S BROKEN
Elmhurst resident Andrea Klick enjoys living near Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, but she doesn’t enjoy the motorists speeding out of the hospital parking lot onto Berteau Avenue.

“I live by the hospital and there’s so much speeding on Berteau, people going 40 (mph) in a 25 (mph zone),” she said. “I don’t know what they could really do, some radar signs may be helpful.”

THE HISTORY
Sgt. Jim Gandy, who heads the Elmhurst Police Department’s traffic division, said Berteau Avenue has long been on the police department’s radar.

“It has been a concern for years,” he said. “We haven’t seen anybody going over 40 or 50 (mph) there, but it’s a difficult area to work with radar because there are no cross streets.”

STATUS
Gandy said Elmhurst police have put a traffic detail on Berteau Avenue three times in the past two years. There have also been three minor traffic accidents on Berteau in that time.

“Nothing out of the ordinary, it’s more of a congestion versus a speeding problem,” Gandy said.
