ELMHURST, IL -

Nearly 15 years after it broke up and about nine years since they have played together, an Elmhurst band is coming back together for one last hurrah.

The Hideouts, a band that was initially grouped together by elementary and high school friends, will play the city’s annual family-friendly Elmfest celebration at 8:30 p.m. June 13 on the Comcast Entertainment Center on Addison Street.

“People are excited about the four of us getting back together,” said Gerry O’Keefe, 36. “We’re at the age where people are having children. Instead of doing this at a bar or nightclub, limiting the audience, people can come out and bring their kids.”

Formed in 1988, the Hideouts split up in 1994 after Trevino developed carpal tunnel syndrome and alternative drummers didn’t work out, O’Keefe said. The band reunited once to play a 1999 benefit.

After approaching the Chamber of Commerce last year about the possibility of playing the event and getting the OK, Trevino said he was thrilled to hear about it, albeit a bit apprehensive due to the fact that he recently had suffered a brain injury during a softball game.

“I’m excited about it, to jam with my old buddies. It’s really exciting for me because it’s been a long time as far as playing together,” said Trevino, 37. “It was a big part of my life years ago, and I just really enjoyed playing with them. ... When they called, I was really excited about it but a little bummed because I was not sure if I could do it, but the last two months I have done well.”

O’Keefe agreed, stating, “We knew he was key.”

Bass guitar player Frank Gradishar, 35, joined the Hideouts after meeting O’Keefe through their guitar teacher in high school. He said the band will play original songs and covers of bands such as the Clash, the Romantics, the Cure and other songs from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

“We’ve got some Rolling Stones, some Beatles and Cheap Trick — the obligatory crowd-pleasing songs,” Gradishar said, adding that when the band started out, they were able to get themselves to the point where they were fairly successful and well-known in the area.

“We made some money, played some good shows. We were young and started out doing things like Battle of the Bands, we were doing all-ages shows at everything from VFW halls to school dances and the occasional club gig,” Gradishar said. “Those were the days where we were playing actual bars. I was underage for sure when we started. ... We played anywhere we could play, really.”
