After spending more than a decade in retail management, Katrina Macias chose to branch out on her own and do something she had always dreamed of: open her own store.

“I felt that I wasn’t being challenged in my old job,” Macias said. “I was offered a promotion, but decided to open my own store instead.”

Macias chose to combine her passion for fashion, retail and infants into Bliss Baby, her very own store in The Shops on Butterfield at Yorktown Shopping Center.

After opening in early October, Macias said she has already grown a supportive clientele.

“It’s really nice,” Macias said. “Everyone that has come in has been giving suggestions on different items to carry.”

The store sells coveted clothing brands for babies, some worn by children of celebrities, including actress Halle Berry and singer Gwen Stefani.

In her off-time, Macias scours the Internet, looking for pictures of the children wearing the brands featured, and she prints out pictures to post in the store. The latest apparel featured is a pink bunny jacket worn by one of Angelina Jolie’s daughters, posted right beside the jacket for sale.

“We have a lot of new, trendy and funky things, especially for boys,” Macias said. “But we have traditional items, too.”

Macias hand-picked three employees to join her in one of four new businesses to enter The Shops on Butterfield in October and November.

“These new retail concepts are great additions to The Shops on Butterfield,” said Lindsey Burke, marketing director for Yorktown Center. “The new stores mix perfectly with our existing retailers to create an exceptional shopping center with something for everyone.”

The three employees hired don’t include the non-paid fashion consultant on duty and her inspiration for opening the store — her 3-year-old daughter Maya. Even though she isn’t on the payroll, Macias said she gets benefits.

“She’s spoiled, so she gets whatever,” Macias said of her daughter.

And after being open for about a month, Macias said she hasn’t had any regrets leaving her old job and starting anew.

“I do what I do because I love it,” Macias said. “It’s my passion, and it comes through in everything I do.”
