Sandburg receives high honor

Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 is proud to announce that Sandburg Middle School has been named a 2007 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School.

Sandburg is one of only 287 schools in the United States, and one of only 19 schools in Illinois, so named. The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools award, one of the most prestigious in the country, distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap.

“The Blue Ribbon award reflects the tremendous efforts put forth by the students and staff toward the goal of achieving academic excellence,” said Superintendent Lynn Krizic. “This award brings great pride not only to Sandburg Middle School but to the entire Elmhurst community.”

As part of the recognition, two representatives from Sandburg have been invited to an awards program and reception in Washington in November. In addition, special celebratory events are now being planned locally to honor the students and staff at Sandburg for the accomplishment.

Resident wins hospitality scholarship

Elmhurst resident Lisa Marie Danno, a junior at Michigan State University’s School of Hospitality Business, won the $5,000 2007 Hostmark Hospitality Group Robert J. Cataldo Scholarship from the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, an organization comprising more than 450 Illinois hotels.

Danno is one of 25 IHLA scholarship winners recently announced.

“We had scores of worthy candidates apply for our scholarship program this year,” said Marc J. Gordon, president of the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association. “We selected Lisa for the highest award simply because of her dedication to our industry and the promise that she will be one of our leaders in the years ahead.”

Over the summer, Danno completed a 31-day study-abroad program in India, Thailand and Dubai, where she studied the financing, development and management of the lodging industry in an international setting. She spent the other half of her summer completing the second level internship with Kimpton Hotels where she rotated through the front office, housekeeping and sales in Kimpton’s three Chicago properties.

Danno plans to gain a departmental management position upon graduation, rotate through various functional areas within a hotel, and become a general manager somewhere either in the U.S. or overseas.
