The recent run of a sublime musical production of “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” starred actor (and pianist) Tom Clear (from left), Anna Hammonds and George Keating of Berwyn at Pheasant Run. It marked the last show under the name Noble Fool Theatricals, with the troupe and training facility renaming itself Fox Valley Repertory this month.

Mini-getaways for couples and families can be an antidote to the long, cold winter months ahead, with suburban resorts providing close-to-home escapes for a welcome change of landscape.

For splashy winter fun, a Mayan-themed indoor waterpark is part of the Waverly Hotel in Elmhurst, which offers attractions including a Brookfield Zoo package. Others resort options encompass the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Eaglewood in Itasca, and Indian Lakes in Bloomingdale, featuring fine dining at Shiraz on the Water. Without leaving Illinois, you can amble along a Bourbon Street streetscape conjuring up the Big Easy at Pheasant Run Resort, where DuPage meets Kane County.

Pheasant Run has game-filled options for families and grandparents in January, as well as a weight-loss spa experience. Pick from among swimming pools, restaurants, live bands, diverse spa services and Zanies Comedy Club to further fine-tune the experience. For theatrical productions, the resort is home base for Fox Valley Repertory, the professional theater company formerly called Noble Fool Theatricals.
