Burke Sims blew his competition out of the water to caputure the state's top prize Saturday in Winnetka and broke a 20-year-old state meet record in the process.
The Downers Grove North senior won the 500-yard freestyle title in 4:24.74 at the IHSA state finals. He touched the wall nearly six seconds before his nearest challenger, Lake Park's Bryant Honsa (4:30.43).
The time also established a new state standard, surpassing Brian Gunn of Hinsdale Central who swam 4:25.54 in the 1989 preliminaries.
Sims now shares the distinction of state champion with his father, Dave, who won the same event in 1980.
Less than a second separated Burke Sims from another first-place finish. He finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:38.16), right behind Neuqua Valley's Kevin Overholt (1:37.24) and Honsa (1:37.61).
Fellow Downers North senior Ryan Downey earned a medal in the 500 free. He placed eighth in 4:35.37.
