Downers Grove South fourth quarter excellence in free throw shooting and defense produced a 50-41 win Friday at Addison Trail.
The victory marked the fifth time in seven years that Downers South (20-4, 10-1 in the WSC Gold) has reached the 20-victory mark in a season.
Leading just 35-30 with 6:18 left in the game, the Mustangs began a big closing run with a three-point basket by guard Alex Gorniak (17 points).
That trifecta began a 10-2 run over a span of over four minutes, capped by two free throws by Malcolm Herron (12 points, eight in the fourth quarter) with 2:02 left that stretched the lead to 45-32. The Mustangs made 9 of their first 10 free throws of the fourth quarter when the game was close.
