A man whose DNA from his toothbrush matched evidence from a 2006 rape of a Downers Grove woman pleaded guilty Tuesday, Dec. 1.
Larry Barrett, 24, of Summit was sentenced to 15 years in prison and is charged with 49 counts of residential burglary, home invasion and criminal sexual assault, according to Downers Grove police Sgt. David Bormann.
Barrett is being held in DuPage County Jail awaiting a sentencing to prison, Bormann said.
The charges are in connection with the sexual assault of a 29-year-old woman after he forced his way inside the Autumn Grove apartment complex in the 2100 block of Prentiss Drive.
Barrett pushed the woman down onto her couch and repeatedly raped her, choking her and covering her face with a pillow, according to police reports.
Last year, Barrett was being held on an unrelated charge in the Jefferson County Jail in Mt. Vernon when jail officials took his toothbrush for a DNA sample, according to Bormann.
In November 2006, Downers Grove detectives asked a jail official to obtain items that could contain Barrett’s DNA like a toothbrush, razor or silverware, according to court documents.
The DNA taken from the toothbrush matched the DNA found at the scene of a sex crime Oct. 9, 2006.
Barrett must serve 85 percent of his sentence, according to Bormann.
