Downers Grove police continue to search for the trailer of a stolen Eby-Brown semi-truck and the cartons of cigarettes it contained after an armed robber hijacked the truck and kidnapped its driver last week.
Deputy Police Chief Jim Black said when Chicago police located the truck on the northwest side of the city July 8, only the driving cab portion remained.
“When Chicago Police called and said they located the truck, we assumed it was the whole truck,” Black said. “When we got out there, the only part they recovered was the cab part, and the trailer was gone.”
Black said it is unclear whether the hijacker stole a different truck cab to move the trailer or if the cigarettes were transferred into another vehicle and the trailer was ditched.
“(The trailer) was 90 percent full of cigarettes,” Black said. “It’s probably a pretty significant loss to the company at this point.”
On Monday, Black said police are waiting to receive a full inventory of the trailer’s contents and have not determined a monitory loss.
The Eby-Brown semi-truck was hijacked at gunpoint from a Downers Grove Speedway gasoline station on Ogden Avenue at 3:30 p.m. July 7. The armed robber also kidnapped the truck driver, who was later found in Joliet, police said.
Gus Ferracane, a general manager of Eby-Brown, said the company is relieved that kidnapped driver Thomas Fleming, 24, of Chicago is back home.
“We’re just very pleased that Tom Fleming is found and safe and in pretty good condition,” Ferracane said.
The trailer’s license plate number is 351 683 S/T, and the number 947 appears on the trailer.
Police said the hijacker is described as a white male with short brown hair, and the type of handgun is not known.
