Westmont, IL -

Exactly two weeks after his disappearance, a 12-year-old Westmont runaway was returned to his father in safe condition.

Jacob Grammer, 55 W. 59th St., had been staying in an abandoned dental office near Plainfield Road and Cass Avenue in Darien for the duration of time he was gone, said his father Jacob Grammer Sr.

“He was looking a little sickly, and he was getting kind of scared with all the storms,” Grammer said. “We’re glad to have him home.”

The dental office, which Grammer Sr. said “was more like an abandoned house,” was littered with two weeks worth of KitKat Bars and Fruit Loops. Grammer Sr. said the owner of the building has agreed not to press charges if Jacob cleans up the trash he left.

Jacob was picked up by Westmont police Detective Craig Gomorczak at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday while walking along Plainfield Road. He was taken to the Police Department and released to his father.

According to police, 10 minutes prior to being picked up, Jacob had asked an employee at a Phillips 66 gasoline station near Plainfield Road and Cass Avenue for directions to the Police Department. When the employee asked why, Jacob pointed to a flier his father had posted at the gasoline station and said he was the runaway.

The employee called Jacob’s father, who called the Westmont police.

Police said there was no evidence Jacob was the victim of a crime during the time he was missing. As of Friday, there is no basis for filing criminal charges against him for any of his actions.

Grammer Sr. said Jacob has an appointment with a counselor, and the family is looking into an animal therapy shelter to help improve his social skills.

“I’m glad he’s back and safe,” Grammer Sr. said. “We’ll be working on building trust back and dealing with this stuff in the future.”

Because police believed Jacob was still in the area of his home, Police Chief Jim Ramey said officers and detectives interviewed many of his friends and their parents and checked the vacant fields and unoccupied buildings on the south end of the village on a frequent basis.

Ramey said he was grateful to the members of the community who reported sightings of Jacob.

“Although our department committed significant resources to the search for Jacob Grammer, we believe it was a worthwhile effort,” Ramey said. “We are glad that he was located and returned safely to his family.”
