A new public works director with experience in both the public sector and private firms took over the department Monday after the position had been filled temporarily for more than a year.

Naneil Newlon, of Naperville, was selected from dozens of applicants from across the country.

“I am very happy to be here,” Newlon said Monday. “I’ve always thought Downers Grove was a great community and I’m very happy to be a part of the team here.”

Newlon’s annual salary is $110,000.

Robin Weaver was brought in to fill the role of interim public works director on a temporary basis after David Barber resigned from the position in the summer of 2007.

Village Manager David Fieldman said Weaver is no longer employed with the village.

Doug Kozlowski, village spokesman, said Weaver previously worked for the village of Glen Ellyn and it was not known where she was headed next to work.

Fieldman said a job posting on the village’s Web site brought in many applications for the director position.

“We had a great response. We had dozens of highly qualified individuals from across the county,” Fieldman said.

“We narrowed down the field. (Newlon’s) just a great fit for our organization. She’s a good combination of public sector leadership experience with a consulting firm that specializes in capital project design. That’s exactly what we are looking for here to round out the public works team.”

Newlon has more than 17 years of experience in public works management. She has a master’s degree in public administration from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor of science degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Illinois.

Newlon is a licensed professional engineer with the state.

Before being selected for the position in Downers Grove, Newlon worked for the city and park district of Naperville, and the village of Woodridge. Most recently, Newlon was a senior project manager for Christopher B. Burke Engineering West in St. Charles.
