A summer of softball led to a friendship that would inspire Downers Grove resident Chris Linde to walk for a cause. Linde met Darien resident Terri Rees in 2006 after Linde’s daughter joined Rees’ husband’s softball team.
That year, Rees was diagnosed with leukemia, inspiring Linde to walk the rim of the Grand Canyon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Looking ahead to her next adventure in 2009, Linde’s motivation will again be Rees. “Nothing would inspire me more than to hike side-by-side with Terri Rees,” Linde said.
Q Why did you get involved with Hike for Discovery?
A In early January of this year, I had received a brochure in the mail about Hike For Discovery. After reading the alarming statistics of leukemia and lymphoma, I felt I needed to join the fight against blood cancers. I raised more than $4,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The support I received from the community and Center Cass School District 66 was overwhelming.
Q What was the 12-week training program like?
A For 12 weeks prior to the Grand Canyon hike, I participated in weekend hikes all around the area. Along with the other members of the Illinois chapter of Hike For Discovery, we started out with a one-hour hike duration, which led to our longest hike of six hours at Starved Rock. We trained at such places as Herrick Lake, Busse Woods, Poplar Creek, Palos Sag, Indiana Dunes State Park, and Chain O’ Lakes. Our weekly workout schedule consisted of both cardio and strength training.
Q How can people donate to your next hike and what can they do to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?
A The next season of HFD will begin in January 2009 with information meetings throughout the Chicagoland area. At that time, I will find out where the Hike destinations will be. I will set up my personal Hike for Discovery Web site where people can donate online, safely and securely. Those interested in supporting the LLS, can contact the Illinois Chapter of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at (312) 651-7350. I welcome anyone to join me in helping those people battling blood cancers.
