The Downers Grove Village Council has entered into an agreement with the state Department of Transportation for the reconstruction of a portion of Prairie Avenue.
As part of the agreement, IDOT will pay more than $1.17 million and the village will pay for $504,600 for the project, which will take place between Fairview and Forest avenues.
The village’s fiscal year 2009 budget includes $750,000 in funding for this portion of the capital project.
This portion of the road’s resurfacing and reconstruction is phase two of a multi-million dollar overhaul of Prairie Avenue from Belmont Road to Fairview Avenue. The resurfacing and reconstruction of Prairie Avenue from Forest Avenue to Belmont Road, or the western part of the project, was mostly completed last year. Phase one also included some water main and sewer instillation.
In 2004, the village was awarded a grant from the Surface Transportation Program through DuPage Mayors and Managers conference for the reconstruction of Prairie Avenue.
Mayor Ron Sandack said another portion of the project has been completed and that is the land acquisition at one of the project’s impacted intersections.
“This is the phase we had to put on hold to take care of the intersection of Prairie Avenue and Main Street,” Sandack said. “We needed some additional land from property owners in the quadrant so we could widen Prairie and Main so it would be a safer road.”
Village spokesman Doug Kozlowski said phase two work will begin around Memorial Day and should be completed around Thanksgiving.
