Downers Grove, IL -

Downers Grove resident Michael Vergauwen, 52, drowned Sunday after jumping into DuSable Harbor to help a friend, according to JoAnn Taylor, spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.

A spokesperson for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said Tuesday the death was ruled a drowning accident.

A message left at a number listed for Vergauwen was not returned Tuesday.

Taylor said Vergauwen jumped into the water, 100 N. Lake Shore Drive, around 10:15 a.m. to help his friend, who is in his 20s.

“The first man went into the water to get a bag that fell in,” Taylor said. “(Vergauwen) went into help this person and they both began struggling. Other boats spotted this and called for assistance.”

Vergauwen was taken to Northwestern Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Taylor said the Chicago police and fire departments responded as well as the Coast Guard.

Chicago police said the first man to jump in after the bag is still alive, but his status was unknown. Police would not release his name.
