Alexis Ocampo is a second-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and the two-time World Karate-Do Confederation Junior Champion.
And she’s only 16 years old.
Last month, Alexis, a junior at Downers Grove South High School, competed in the championships in Slovenia where she defended the title she first earned in 2006.
She took home two gold medals in the karate techniques of kata and kumite. Kata includes a routine demonstrating karate techniques. Kumite involves sparring and fighting an opponent.
“I was confident because I knew what to expect, but I was so nervous because I wanted to get two gold medals again,” Alexis said.
Alexis leaves Friday for the Youth Olympic Development Program at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Alexis was invited to attend the training camp because of her performance at the USA National Karate Federation championships in July.
Alexis said her goal is to compete in karate during the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Alexis, who started participating in karate at 6, said she trains five days a week for up to two hours a day in her basement where she uses punching bags, weights and mats. Alexis is trained by her brother and sister-in-law, Omar and Maria Ocampo, who are chief instructors and founders of Midwest Karate-Do Association.
“To me, karate is something I can definitely express myself through. It gives me more discipline and teaches me how to be a better person and respect myself and others,” Alexis said.
