When space on Main Street became available, Boll Weevil’s owners decided it was time for a move.
But co-owner Bella DelPercio said she did not want to shut down the spot at 1008 Curtiss St., where she opened a year ago. Instead, she decided to expand her range of products, creating Boll Weevil Bath & Body, which is celebrating its grand opening Friday.

“It was actually harder than opening the clothing store,” DelPercio said. “I have to like the smell of something and the way it feels to buy it.”
While Boll Weevil works with a few major clothing makers for its original store, DelPercio contacted soap makers from around the world who sent her samples of their products. Along with her husband and two sons, she tried the products, which she said is the only animal testing she allows in her shop. The soaps making the cut wound up on the shelves, some tagged as favorites of Bella or her sons, who also are owners of the store.
“I like so many different ones,” Bella said. “When I’m talking to people I tell them to just smell them and decide what they like best.”
The shop sells soaps from Florida, Hawaii, Italy and Canada along with sponges, massage and perfume oil, candles, bath balms and incense. There’s also a few children-friendly items including SpongeBob soaps and bath products for dogs.
Some of the clothing is still sold there including the Mexican gauze line. The store has added a few new items including pajamas, Wrigleyville and Southside girls T-shirts and “Downers Grove rocks” shirts made for Heritage Festival. There also are earrings and necklaces made with silver and crystals by a Downers Grove resident and regular customer.
The change has worked out well DelPercio said, with many new people coming out to the Main Street location. She still is trying to spread the word about their new men’s line there.
“We’re known for being a women’s shop, but it seems to be picking up more and more every day,” said Bobby, one of Bella’s sons.
The body shop already has won fans in the Downers Grove Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is organizing a ribbon cutting at 4:30 Friday. The event will feature snacks, discounts for sales at the shop and coupons for the clothing store.
“It’s just a real nice different little shop for downtown,” said Chamber program coordinator Heather Prince. “Bella’s really made an effort to get fun products that you might not see anywhere else as well as things that are organic made and handmade. It smells good as soon as you walk in the door.”
