Going back to school at age 48 was not something Regina Rubik ever thought she would see herself doing — until she saw her family in need of more.
Rubik said her son was diagnosed with a chronic illness which required her to further her education and find a way to get health insurance.
“I have a sick child who has been sick his whole life,” Rubik said. “We went through many hardships.”
Rubik attended Everest College in Burr Ridge for a medical assistant certification. Patient care is familiar to Rubik, after taking care of her son and her elderly parents.
“It is just part of who I am and it was a part of me and something I love,” Rubik said.
A goal of Rubik’s in college was to inspire other students around her and aim to be a role model — which helped her win the 2009 Dream Award offered by the school. The reason Everest College chose Rubik was because she was considered “an exemplary student who demonstrates passion, ambition and focus in the workplace.”
“You do the things you need to do to achieve where you want to be,” Rubik said. “I have never had a vacation my whole life — I take care of my son and was determined to be a role model for those around me.”
Rubik currently works for DuPage Medical Group and his happy with her position as a medical assistant but could see herself going back to school for a nursing degree.
“There are always things on the horizon, not sure what that is yet,” Rubik said. “There is always something else.”
