“Ralph’s World,” a zany family concert featuring Ralph Covert, is offered in two performances at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle. They are presented from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 12, and 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 13.
The concerts spark adventures through jungle vines, to the bottom of the sea and to an amazing rhyming circus. Kids and parents can experience the performances outdoors as part of the “In Tune With Trees” concert series. Covert released “The Rhyming Circus” in May, his first album of new songs since his Grammy-nominated “Green Gorilla, Monster and Me” in 2005. Covert is a perennial favorite at The Arboretum.
“His lyrics and rhymes are so much fun, and the melodies and tempos so joyous and energetic, that the kids have a ball, completely caught up in the performance,” said Marilyn Baysek, Arboretum special events manager.
“Going totally over their heads, however, and what makes Ralph’s performances so much fun for grownups, are the double-entendres he tosses out there to mom and dad every now and then, not to mention the hyperbole and sheer preposterousness of the song’s topic, all of which the kids have totally accepted at face value.”
For tickets, call (630) 725-2066 or visit www.mortonarb.org. The concert lawn opens one hour prior to the performances.
Families can make a day of their trip to the Arboretum at I-88 and Route 53. They can take a trip around Meadow Lake and gaze at the gargantuan bug sculptures in David Rogers’ Big Bugs exhibition or stroll through the Children’s Garden where they can tip-toe across Wonder Pond or pique their curiosity in the Backyard Discovery Gardens. Visitors can tour the 1,700-acre property with a ride on The Acorn Express, a 50-minute guided tram tour.
