Theatre-on-the-Hill will present the musical comedy “City of Angels,” winner of the 1989 Tony Award for Best New Musical, at Bolingbrook’s Performing Arts stage.
Described as a witty, steamy and funny take on classic film noir from the 1940s, it was written by Larry Gelbart (“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Tootsie” and “M*A*S*H”), complemented by Cy Coleman’s jazz score.
“‘City of Angels’ is two great musicals in one, where two seamless and very funny plots mesh into one amazing story,” director Michael Fudala said. “One half deals with the heartburn of writing a Hollywood screenplay; the other half is an enactment of the screenplay as it lurches through endless rewrites, forced upon the writer by an unscrupulous studio honcho ... real-time characters are performed in color, and the fictional characters are dressed in shades of black and white.”
Area actors include Matthew Bockus, Bobby Alexander, Dave Lichty, Craig Engel, Michael Brown and Christine Martin, all of Bolingbrook; Ken Schaefer and Michelle Ho, both of Woodridge; Susan O’Byrne, Gail Heerdt and Jen Schmidt, all of Downers Grove; Michelle Kash, Megan Mitchell and Melissa Mitchell, all of Naperville; and Gary Patterson of West Chicago.
The show is at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with matinees at 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 7 to 23. The stage at 375 W. Briarcliff Road is behind the police station in the Town Center building. Visit tothbolingbrook.com.
