Although they were not allowed to scale the roof, police officers at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Woodridge joined officers throughout the state Friday for the seventh annual stakeout to benefit Special Olympics.
As of press time, donation totals were not available. Last year, about $144,000 raised at 68 Dunkin’ Donuts locations. This year, nearly 100 locations participated.
Every customer who visited a Cop on a Rooftop store and made a donation to the Law Enforcement Torch Run received a free donut. Those who donated $10 or more received a Law Enforcement Torch Run travel mug and a coupon for free coffee.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run was started in 1986. Every year, more than 3,000 officers in Illinois cover 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope to the State Summer Games in Normal in June. The run is the largest year-round fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.
The fundraising projects are done to raise public awareness and money for the athletes of Special Olympics. Special Olympics Illinois is a nonprofit organization that offers year-round training and competition in 19 sports for more than 20,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics Illinois programs enhance physical fitness, motor skills, self-confidence and social skills and encourage family support.
