Emily McAsey has won the race for the Illinois House 85th District seat, defeating Brent Hassert by a wide margin.
Hassert called to concede to McAsey at about 9:15 p.m. after McAsey mounted an insurmountable lead.
By 10 p.m., with all 87 precincts reporting, McAsey had tallied 30,301 votes while Hassert — who has served in the House since 1996 — had 21,369.
Early vote totals had yet to be factored in, Hassert said.
“I called Emily and congratulated her — she beat me fair and square,” said Hassert. “Over the last eight years my district has become a more Democratic area, and while I was able to win the last few elections, this year was unique in that Barack Obama carried a lot of weight.
Hassert served the last two terms as the Republican Deputy Leader in the House.
“I leave with my head held high. A lot was accomplished in my district while I served,” Hassert said.
McAsey could not be reached for comment.
9:45 p.m. —
With 44 of 45 precincts reporting it looks like Republicans will maintain two of the three seats in District 4 of the Will County Board.
As of 9:45 p.m. unofficial results from the Office of Will County show Ed Kusta, Jr. and Charles Maher, incumbents, were top vote getters among six candidates.
Jacqueline Traynere, Democratic challenger, was in third place with 9,644 votes tallied.
Kusta, Jr. and Maher had garnered 10,147 and 9,661 apiece.
“It’s still too close to get a real comfort zone right now,” said Kusta, Jr.
These figures do not take into account early ballots cast in our district,” Kusta, Jr. said.
Traynere said she was “thrilled at the prospect of serving our community.”
“This is a victory for diversity,” said Traynere, a Bolingbrook resident.
Incumbent Republican Wayne McMillan said he was disappointed in receiving 8,694 votes, with Democratic challenger Karen Gonzalez with 7,005 votes.
“I’ve had better days, better elections,” said McMillan.
