Three Downers Grove Grade School District 58 students, who participate in the Extend Program, were awarded for achieving the highest honor in the WordMasters Challenge.

In the Blue Division, fifth-graders Mark Blessing and Tommy Leinart and sixth-grader Allison Kirkegaard all earned perfect scores during the competition in December.

The WordMasters Challenge is a national language arts competition that asks students to learn new words beyond their grade level and then use the words to complete analogies.

Throughout the nation, 167 fifth-graders and 31 sixth-graders achieved perfect scores.

The other Extend Program students who also earned outstanding results include fifth-graders Ari Scott, Laura Conklin and Akila Shamugham. The sixth-graders include Abby Kargol, Kate Lawrence, Margot Miller and Allison Williams. The students were coached by Pat Marengo.

There are two more WordMasters meets the district’s students will participate in later this year. In June, the students who achieved and improved the most in the course will receive medals and certificates.
