Downers Grove South High School students driving to school might not be able to use Springside Avenue to park.

Both sides of Springside Avenue from 63rd Street to the village border, 650 feet north, may become a “No Parking Any Time.” The proposed restriction is under consideration from the Downers Grove Village Council.

The restriction stems from the proximity of Downers South, 1436 Norfolk St., to Springside Avenue. According to the Village Council’s Aug. 25 agenda, students park on both sides of this road resulting in “a very narrow, almost impassable roadway and the blocking of several driveways.”

Village Commissioner Marilyn Schnell said she had no problem with the recommendation, but wanted to follow up with the residents and officials in six months to a year if it was approved.

“I want to make sure that really it has not infringed on the residents ability to have people over and socialize,” Schnell said at the meeting.

In other news, a resident also has requested a handicap parking spot on Main Street south of Franklin Street.

Both modifications were recommended unanimously by the Transportation and Parking Commission. The Downers Grove Village Council will voted on the parking items Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The Village Council also is expected to approve the purchase of road salt for this winter.

According to the contract, the village will be purchasing salt at $63.24 per ton. Commissioner

William Waldack said he was pleased with the price compared to other municipalities.

“It’s probably about $40 less than a lot of people are paying this year,” Waldack said.

It was also revealed that the village has 1,000 tons of salt left in a Public Works storing area from last winter which can be used.

The village expects to save money on salt since it also will be buying beet juice to mix with it. The cost of the beet juice has yet to be determined.
