Safety experts recognize June as Home Safety Month. As summer nears, you’ll be using ladders for painting, rags for cleaning and tools for repairs. While you’ve got them out, take time to make your home safer for all family members. Use the following checklist to prevent injuries.

• Prevent fires and burns. Install working smoke alarms and hold family fire drills. Stay at the stove when cooking; never leave cooking unattended. Keep at least 3 feet of space between space heaters and anything that can burn. Lock matches and lighters in a drawer.

• Prevent poisonings. Lock poisons, cleaners, medications and all dangerous items in a place where children cannot reach them. If you keep medications in a purse, do not leave it open for curious children. Keep all cleaners in their original containers; do not mix them together. Keep the Poison Control Center number (800) 222-1222 posted near the telephone.

• Prevent choking and suffocation. Remember things that fit through a toilet paper tube can cause young children to choke. Examine toys for before giving them to young children. Place children in bed on their backs, and don’t put pillows, comforters or toys in the cribs with the child. Clip the loops in window cords and place them up high where children can’t get them. Teach kids to take small bites.

• Supervise. Accidents can happen to young children in the blink of an eye. Keep them in your sight at all times.
