Anyone who wants to donate children’s books to Shining Star Program, a DuPage County Sheriff’s Office initiative to promote reading for children, can drop off donations at the Sheriff’s Office radio Room, 501 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.
The books will be distributed to children as part of Be A Cheerful Kid packets of materials given to children when traumatic situations arise, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Each packet contains about a dozen books.
According to John Zaruba, DuPage County sheriff, officers have been distributing books as part of the program since 2002.
“My deputies have given out thousands of books to kids all over the county,” Zaruba said. “The Shining Star Program is all about allowing these children to have a positive interaction with a deputy and give them a chance to develop an appreciation for reading.”
Book pickups can be arranged by calling (630) 407-2317.
