April 18, 1924 Born in Chicago.

1944-1946 Serves in the United States Navy. He later served in the Naval Reserve until retiring in 1968.

1949 Earns law degree from Loyola University Law School.

1967-1974 Serves in the Illinois House of Representatives.

1974 Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, 6th District from Illinois.

1976 The Hyde Amendment, banning federally funded abortions, passes.

1995 Named chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

1998 Appointed to conduct the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton.

2006 Retires from the House.

Nov. 5, 2007 Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Nov. 29, 2007 Dies from complications from a July open heart surgery.
