Reservations for Forest Preserve District of DuPage County picnic areas and family and youth-group campsites for 2009 will begin Jan. 2.

Groups planning family reunions, church picnics or other gatherings can choose from 25 shelters and picnic areas, but should make reservations for holidays well in advance.

Permit fees vary based on site amenities and capacity, which range from 25 to 300. Some shelters have fireplaces, built-in grills or electricity. In select areas, picnickers can also rent canopy tents or large-capacity grills.

The family campground at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville offers 60 sites for tents, trailers and motor homes. It is open May through September only on Friday and Saturday nights, but additional days are available on holiday weekends and the week proceeding July 4.

Each site can accommodate a maximum of eight people and two tents and includes a gravel parking pad, fire ring and picnic table. Nineteen sites have electricity.

The campground features restrooms with showers, running water and refuse containers. Campers can also purchase firewood for $5 per bundle. Outside firewood is not allowed.

Family-campground permit fees for DuPage County residents are $15 per night for a site without electricity and $20 for a site with electricity. For out-of-county residents, fees are $25 per night without electricity, and $30 per night with electricity. Senior citizens may receive one free weekend-long permit per household.

Youth-group campgrounds are located at the following forest preserves: Blackwell in Warrenville, Churchill Woods in Glen Ellyn, Greene Valley in Naperville, Pratt’s Wayne Woods in Wayne and Waterfall Glen in Darien.

These semi-primitive areas are just for tents and are solely for use by recognized nonprofit youth groups. Permit fees vary and are based on site capacity, which varies from 25 to 100.

Open year-round, all sites have picnic tables and fire rings, with latrines, firewood and water pumps are nearby. A youth-group cabin with electricity at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton is also available.

All permit fees are nonrefundable.

Camping-permit holders must be at least 21 years old; picnic-permit holders must be at least 18. Permit holders must remain on site.

Visitors can download permit applications from the district’s Web site, www.dupageforest.com and submit them by mail or fax.

Permits are also available at Forest Preserve District headquarters, 3S580 Naperville Road in Wheaton or over the phone at (630) 933-7248 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
