Glenbard Township High School District 87 has started various fundraising efforts throughout its four high schools to provide relief to earthquake survivors in Haiti.

“Like so many in the community, our students were eager to help those devastated by the disaster in Haiti,” said Peg Mannion, community relations coordinator for District 87.

Glenbard East Many fundraising ideas have been suggested to school officials. A District 87 press release said during one period of the day, students will hold a competition to raise money.

Classrooms will compete against each other to raise as much money as possible, whether it be in bills or loose change. The class that raises the most money will win a pizza party.

Shahe Bagdasarian, assistant principal of student services at East, said the Student Council might set up a collection jar at lunch instead of the competition.

“They’re probably going to start the fundraisers at some point this week,” Bagdasarian said.

Glenbard North Student groups are putting together a Shelter Box to send to Haiti. This includes a tent for a family of 10, coloring books, crayons and pens, survival equipment such as thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, and tool kits with hammers, axes, saws and more. Glenbard West The Student Council and school staff are in the process of organizing a variety of fundraising drives to contribute to the American Red Cross.
