Hinsdale, IL -

The relocation of Hinsdale’s farmers market to Burlington Park this year already is paying dividends.

The morning market has been filled with activity every Monday this summer. Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce President John Karstrand said the move from the parking lot between Hinsdale Avenue and First Street to the downtown park on Chicago Avenue has been a magnet to draw in patrons.

“It’s much more visible and there’s a lot more space for the vendors,” he said. “Just overall there’s shade with the trees, and it’s not jammed in a parking lot.”

From mouthwatering sweets from Hinsdale’s own Toni Marie’s to specialty oils and vinegars from The Olive Tap in Downers Grove, the market draws a range of vendors.

Steve Nickles, who owns Nickles Distribution Inc. and represents Gloria’s Gourmet Meats and Eggs, said he likes the openness of the park and meeting patrons with their children and their dogs.

“Everyone’s friendly here. We’ve had a great response,” he said. “Hinsdale is doing a wonderful job with this market.”

Liz Mundt of La Grange said the market has provided a terrific opportunity for her sister Christine Yoelin, who owns Splash Soaps.

“It’s given my sister the impetus to do something more with her soaps,” Mundt said. “She does these wonderful soaps that are completely chemical free, which is really special.”

Western Springs resident Amy Cox has been coming to the Hinsdale farmers’ market for the last 12 years. She said it is  exciting to see people embracing the market more with awareness about freshness and sustainability. She enjoys getting to know the farmers.

“I love that connection with the growers and the farmers and learning about their lives,” she said. “You find these people who do things not just for the money but because they’re really passionate about it.”
