After helping a Kankakee school with its flooded library, the Lace School Kids4good organization is extending its volunteer spirit to a school in Haiti.
Kids4good is a group of about 50 fourth- and fifth-graders that meet once a week to find solutions to life’s problems. Coordinator Cynthia McGann calls it “Xtreme service project work.”
“We just approach each new project uniquely. They started as local in nature, but they’ve become more global in the past couple of years,” she said.
The last project replenished a Kankakee area school library that was lost in a flood. The book drive has received about 1,500 books to give, and mobilization for delivery will be underway shortly.
“We like to see the full cycle, and we’re going to try and get as many students as possible to see the book delivery,” McGann said.
The newest undertaking, Hope4Haiti, is just beginning. The project involves educating the children of Haiti, and also helping a school pay for a $4,000 addition to house additional students.
“It’s quite the project, and we have to educate the students about Haiti in a way that is kid-friendly, in a way that they can relate, and that’s not too overwhelming,” said McGann.
In mid-April, an administrator from the school in Haiti will visit Lace School to receive a wall hanging the children have made for his school, as well as speak about his country to the Darien students.
“He may be able to take a check back with him. We’ll see if we have anything for him by then,” said McGann, who will be setting up a Web site and selling T-shirts for donations.
