A police officer and a Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District firefighter were injured battling a blaze at a Woodridge townhome Friday.

A postal worker delivering mail reported the fire at about 1 p.m. at 7030 Dover Court, near The Home Depot on Woodward Avenue in Woodridge. Within minutes, smoke was billowing from roof vents and the second floor of the eight-unit two-story building.

It took about 90 minutes and 50 firefighters to control the fire, according to Darien-Woodridge Acting Chief Wayne Messenger.

The first firefighters arrived six minutes after the call and hauled hoses through thick smoke and fire to the first and second floors of the unit. They then discovered they were sandwiched in by the blaze, he said.

“What happened was, they got up to the second floor and in the attic, but then they had fire below them, too, in the space between the first and second floor,” said Messenger.

No one was home in the unit, he said, adding the fire started in a second-floor bathroom. Messenger would not give details on what ignited the fire.

Before firefighters arrived, two police officers knocked on doors and evacuated residents from two neighboring townhouses.

One Woodridge police officer went to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and a firefighter was hospitalized for a knee injury, though both were released later that day, Messenger said. No residents were injured.

The two townhouses where the fire broke out will be uninhabitable for some time, according to a Darien-Woodridge release. Two other neighboring units sustained minor damage but should be occupied soon, the release said. The total damage amount is $300,000.
