If you love what you do, you never have to work another day in your life.
Dr. Frank Norton doesn’t work for a living because he loves his life as a veterinary internist at Berwyn VCA Animal Hospital. He also loves to peer through a viewfinder and capture the moment on film.
Norton’s prowess as a photographer earned him the title of Grand Prize Winner for the Chicago Zoological Society’s 2011 Photo Contest with his photo of Isis and Zenda, the zoo’s two African lions. He received round-trip main cabin air transportation for two to any destination within the continental 48 states in the U.S., served directly by American Airlines or American Eagle, courtesy of American Airlines.
Norton said his interest in photography started about 30 years ago.
“Being a veterinarian, I look at animal behavior,” he said. “Most of my subjects are animals, plants, nature. I can do people, but nothing dramatic.”
As for his winning photo, Norton said he didn’t necessarily set out to photograph the lions as a contest entry.
“I call it ‘subjects of opportunity,’” he said. “I live close to the zoo, so I get on my bike and ride over. The bottom line is, I do that for recreation. I’ll shoot a number of photos. Of course, the lions are always photogenic. It’s a combination of luck and opportunity.”
Norton’s photo of the lions was selected as grand-prize winner by a panel of professional photographers out of nearly 400 images submitted for the contest. They also selected first-, second- and third-place winners in adult and child categories.
Norton said he’s thinking about using his travel prize to go to Yellowstone National Park in September.
As staff internist, Norton said he deals primarily with animals that are ill or have ailments related to the kidneys, liver, heart or lungs.
“And of course, vomiting and diarrhea, those fun subjects for everybody,” he said.
Most of his patients are dogs and cats, but not all.
“Hedgehogs are kind of difficult to treat,” he said.
