
Women’s softball league
The Western Springs Recreation Department is now accepting registration for its women’s softball league. Women (moms and/or 29-and-older) are invited to play 12-inch slow pitch softball in a semi-competitive setting.
Games will be held in Springdale Park on Sundays for the months June and July.
Game times are 4 and 6 p.m. Those interested in participating are encouraged to sign up as an individual or with a pre-formed team.
The cost of registration is $30 per player and the deadline to register is Tuesday, May 27. An organizational meeting will be held that day at 6:30 p.m. at the Western Springs Recreation Center to review rules, rosters and schedules.

Summer programs available
The Western Springs Recreation Department has a large variety of classes for all ages are available including the very popular ones as well as many new programs and activities.
Tennis, camps, sports and special events begin the week of June 9. There will be tennis classes for all ages, fitness programs, lacrosse and volleyball, cooking and art classes, and special interest programs. 31st annual Tower Trot
The village of Western Springs and its Recreation Department will sponsor the annual Tower Trot on Saturday, May 24. The 10K race (6.2 miles) starts at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K race (3.1 miles) starts at 9:30.
There are numerous open age categories and 18 resident age group categories for runners, and separate “Walker” category. Also, the “double” is for runners wishing to compete in both the 10K and 5K races.
Olympic style medallions are awarded to the top runners in each age group and division. The start and finish for both races are at the Grand Aveune Community Center, 4211 Grand Ave.
Preregistration is through the Recreation Center, 1500 Walker St. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Grand Avenue Center.

Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation will again benefit from fund raising efforts by local volunteers. To volunteer or for additional information call the recreation office at (708) 246-9070, stop in the Recreation Center, 1500 Walker during normal office hours or check the website.
Volunteers are needed to help at race day registration and after the finish refreshments.
Adult 3-on-3 hoops league
The Western Springs Recreation Department will sponsor the 15th season of its adult indoor 3-On-3 Basketball League beginning in late May.
The league plays weeknight games at either 7:15, 8:15 or 9:15 p.m. beginning the week of May 26 and ending in early August.
Games are played at the Recreation Center. An organizational meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 21 at the Recreation Center.

7th-8th grade basketball
The Western Springs Recreation Department is sponsoring a 3-on-3 Basketball League for seventh- and eighth-grade students (in the fall of 2008).
The league will play games on Sunday evenings beginning June 15 at the Recreation Center. The league is a “self officiated” league. A scorekeeper/timer will be provided. Games have 20-minute halves.
Divisions for both boys and girls teams are open on a first-come, first-serve basis. The team roster and fee ($135 per team) must be turned in to the recreation office. The first eight teams in both leagues to register will be in the league.
An organizational meeting is set for 6 p.m. Monday, June 9 at the Recreation Center.
