Brookfield, IL -

A woman fell asleep at the wheel at about 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, and crashed into the Grand Boulevard circle at Eight Corners, knocking over the flag pole.

Martha Hernandez, 30, of Chicago was traveling southbound on Maple Avenue and drove through the circle, according to Brookfield police. Officers responded to a 911 call of a car accident and found Hernandez’s car in the middle of the circle.

“It happens every one or two years,” said Deputy Police Chief Jeff Leh.

Hernandez was charged with a stop sign violation, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and damage to village property.

Leh said the village will recover the cost of the flag pole from Hernandez’s insurance company.

She has a court date at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Maybrook Courthouse in Maywood.
