Shoppers and retailers are feeling the impact of a 1 percent sales tax increase that went into effect Tuesday across Cook County.
Those making their purchases in Chicago will be hit with a 10.25 percent tax on some items — the highest sales tax rate of any major city in the United States.
Savvy shoppers may choose to save money by crossing the border into neighboring counties, where some sales tax rates are lower by 3 percent or more.
