
The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday that Western Michigan junior setter Jillian Mitchell of Darien is the MAC West Volleyball Player of the Week.
This is the first career weekly honor for Mitchell and the first this season for the Broncos.
The Downers Grove South alum was named the MVP of the Redbird Classic after leading Western Michigan (5-0) to the tournament championship with an undefeated 3-0 mark. She led the field with 116 assists for 11.6 assists per set, in addition to adding 24 digs, eight kills, five blocks and two aces. With Mitchell leading the way, WMU hit .267.
Mitchell had her best match of the season in the championship match against host school and 2007 NCAA Tournament at-large participant Illinois State with her first double-double of the season on a season-high 46 assists, 10 digs and three block assists. She had 39 assists, eight digs and five kills against Oakland and 31 assists, six digs, two aces and two kills against Western Carolina.
Western Michigan is back in action this weekend in the Black and Gold Challenge in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Broncos will play the host, Wake Forest, on Friday, 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Delaware on Saturday morning and head coach Colleen Munson's former school, East Carolina, on Saturday afternoon.
