Adventist Hinsdale Hospital has named Hyeon Choi, a registered nurse, its nurse of the year. The award is presented annually during National Nurse’s Week in May.

Choi, a Bolingbrook resident, has worked at the hospital for more than 22 years. She worked in the critical care unit and neuro-intensive care unit before moving to the hospital’s Pain Center seven years ago after experiencing back pain herself. Choi believes her personal experience helps her relate to her patients.

“I understand what my patients are going through day by day,” Choi said. “Many times I can use my experience to give them emotional support and encouragement.”

Choi, who known around the hospital by her last name, and her family are active at Grace Baptist Church in Darien, where her husband, John, is the pastor. They have two children.

“Choi spreads the word of God through her example of love, patients and compassion,” said Lesia Douglas, Hinsdale Hospital’s chief nursing officer. “She also is a true team player, exhibiting strong communication skills with patients, physicians, visitors and co-workers.”

Choi also is a member of the American Society of Pain Management Nurses.
