Vehicle set on fire
A beer bottle found stuffed with a rag and liquid likely resulted in a fire that destroyed a 2008 Honda Ridgeline in the 1400 block of Scoville Avenue at about 1:30 a.m. Sept. 5, police said.
Police were called to the scene after witnesses reported seeing smoke emitting from the truck’s windows. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and later discovered the beer bottle on the floor behind the driver’s seat, police said.
The truck’s owner told police the vehicle had not had any recent mechanical work, and she did not know who might have wanted to damage her vehicle, police said.
Public intoxication alleged
Sherome D. Wilson, 37, of Cicero was arrested at about 3:15 a.m. Sept. 5 after he allegedly became combative with officers who suggested he call a taxi for a ride home, police said.
Police responded to the intersection of 26th Street and Highland Avenue after a caller reported seeing a man trying to break into a building. When officers arrived, they found Wilson in his car intoxicated, police said.
Wilson became verbally abusive toward the officers and said he was trying to find a place to sit down and sober up before driving home, according to police. When the officers suggested he call a taxi and leave his vehicle legally parked, Wilson began swearing and became uncooperative, police said.
Wilson also told police he was urinating at the corner of the building and was not attempting to break into the building, police said.
He was issued a ticket for public intoxication, police said.
Man faces DUI charges
Jose Vasquez, 29, of Cicero faces two felony drunken driving charges after he was pulled over for not wearing his seat belt at about 8:45 a.m. Sept. 5, police said.
Vasquez was stopped at a light at the intersection of Ogden and Ridgeland avenues when a patrol officer noticed Vasquez was not wearing his seat belt, police said. Vasquez later failed several field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test indicated his blood-alcohol level was 0.121 percent.
Vasquez was charged with felony driving under the influence of alcohol, felony driving with a blood alcohol level over 0.08 percent, failure to wear a seat belt, driving without insurance and driving on a suspended license.
Four cars burglarized
A Berwyn man was arrested after he told police he entered unlocked cars and removed items including a global positioning system unit and cell phone, police said.
Ahmad Omar, 19, of the 6600 block of West Pershing Road was charged with burglary to a motor vehicle after being arrested at about 10 a.m. Sept. 7. Police were called to the 3600 block of Gunderson Avenue after a report of a suspicious person who possibly removed items from an unlocked car.
Police found Omar running southbound on Gunderson Avenue toward Pershing Road and ordered him to the ground.
Omar initially told officers he was not running from police and was entering cars to look for change to take the bus, police said.
When police searched Omar, they found two lottery scratch off tickets, a pack of cigarettes, a cell phone, and a GPS.
After being taken into custody, Omar later signed a statement admitting he stole the items, police said. The GPS and cell phone were returned to their owners.
Domestic battery alleged
An argument about food led to a domestic battery charge against a Berwyn man.
Alfonso Solano, 28, of the 2500 block of South Clarence Avenue allegedly bit and punched a person at about 8:45 p.m. Sept. 9, police said.
The victim told police Solano was upset because he had come home and found no food in the home, police said. Solano bit the victim’s left forearm and punched the victim in the mouth, police said.
Woman charged with DUI
A Berwyn woman faces drunken driving charges after a hit-and-run crash at about 1 a.m. Sept. 10, police said.
Daniella Valenzeula, 27, of the 3600 block of East Avenue was arrested after police were alerted she had backed into another car in the 6300 block of Ogden Avenue and drove away, police said.
Police found Valenzuela in her car in front of her home with the passenger front wheel on the curb and rear end of the car partially in the street, police said.
When police asked for her driver's license, she handed them a cell phone, receipt and a pack of cigarettes.
Valenzuela was charged with improper backing, leaving the scene of an accident, improper parking, no proof of insurance, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
