No one was injured after a fire broke out in the ventilation system at Turano Bakery this morning.

The Berwyn Fire Department was dispatched to the bakery at 6501 W. Roosevelt Road at 9:18 a.m. this morning after a report of a fire on the roof, according to Fire Chief Denis O’Halloran.

Firefighters arrived and discovered a fire in the ventilation system of one of the bakery’s ovens. The duct ran horizontally through the bakery and up to the roof. When firefighters got on the roof, they found the fire had was beginning to melt the southeast portion of the roof, O’Halloran said.

To avoid a possible explosion of steam buildup, firefighters gathered fire extinguishers to douse the flames with the extinguishers instead of water. O’Halloran said a hose line was ready for firefighters to use if the fire had spread out of the ventilation unit.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and had left the scene by 11 a.m.. O'Halloran said employees were in working on cooling down and cleaning the ovens when they discovered the fire, and the cause of the fire will be investigated by Turano officials and the Berwyn Fire Investigation team.

A 15 foot by 15 foot area of the roof was destroyed by fire and firefighters pulling back tiles to check if the fire had spread. No damage estimate was available as of press time Tuesday.

A total of 17 Berwyn firefighters from all three stations assisted at the scene, and the Stickney Fire Department assisted by covering other calls.
