The city of Berwyn signed a resolution today, ratifying its commitment to active and retired military personnel by signing a community covenant.

The document was signed by a gaggle of officials from the city of Berwyn, both park districts, the township, the fire and police departments as well as many of the local veterans organizations.

“The strength of our soldiers comes from the strength of families. The strength of families is built on the strength of communities,” City Clerk Tom Pavlik read from the resolution. “We, the city of Berwyn, are committed to building partnerships that contribute to the strength and readiness of our soldiers.”

Jeff Janda, executive director of the Berwyn Park District, also announced the park district board recently passed a resolution giving families of deployed military personnel up to $500 a year in free services at the park district. Any active military personnel, regardless of deployment, is also eligible for a 10-percent discount up to $50, Janda said.

Five community members also were given patriotic service awards as part of the Flag Day ceremony. They include Pavlik, Sandy Cervenka, Robert Seton, Rafael Avila and Wayne Parthun, who emceed the event at Serenity Park.

Parthun also praised the active army personnel who came out in full uniform to the ceremony, saying, “The flag would be absolutely meaningless if they weren't out there doing what they're doing for us.”
