A 53-year-old homeless was found dead in his holding cell at the Berwyn Police Department June 11, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
John Terranova, 53, had been arrested earlier for an outstanding Cook County warrant for bond forfeiture stemming from a disorderly conduct charge. He was taken into custody at Ogden and Home avenues pending a transfer to the Cook County sheriff’s department, according to Berwyn Police Commander Tom O’Halloran.
During a routine check, Terranova was found unresponsive at about 3:30 a.m. and pronounced dead just before 4 a.m. at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn.
A spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office said an autopsy was completed Thursday, June 11, but the results were inconclusive.
O’Halloran said Terranova was being treated for cancer, and there was no evidence to suggest that the death was a suicide. He said results from standard autopsy protocols, such as toxicology tests, could take more than a month.
