Berwyn, IL -

Despite massive economic hardships this year, Berwyn firefighters collected more than $22,000 this month to fight muscular dystrophy.

The $22,440 collected during the Fill the Boot campaign is a record-breaking amount, Berwyn Fire Lt. Jim Wojnarowski said. Last year, firefighters collected $19,005 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“Berwyn is always one of the top providers (of Fill the Boot donations),” he said. “We’re always in the top 10.”

But with the economy circling the drain, firefighters made an effort to hike the amount of donations.

“We have guys coming in on off-duty to collect,” Wojnarowski said Wednesday.
