South Berwyn School District 100 is expecting a $2.1 million increase in state funding for the coming school year. District officials say that increased technology in the classroom and full-day kindergarten have garnered an attendance boost which, in turn, has lead to the increase in state funding.

$2.1 million

The plan As a result of increased attendance, South Berwyn School District 100 is expecting a $2.1-million increase in general state aid for the 2011-12 school year. They are budgeting for a total of $15.8 million in state funding — up from $13.7 million this year.
The state formulates the amount of money each school district received based on its average daily attendance, which the district saw a 15-percent bump in this year.
District 100 Business Manager Cheryl Wadsworth attributes the increase in attendance to the district’s new full-day kindergarten and an increase in technology.
“We also have students that are more engaged with the one-on-one Macbooks and iPads, so they want to come to school,” Wadsworth said.
The impact District 100 did not specifically earmark the expected funding increase to any particular purpose, but plans on using it to defray the cost of full-day kindergarten and continue to increase the use of technology in the classroom.
Wadsworth said the district will be adding more laptops and iPads for students to learn.
“That's the goal, and that will increase our test scores because our children are engaged and learning and in school,” Wadsworth said. “We want them to be in school, so the more time they're here, they more time they spend learning, and that corresponds to additional revenue.”
