Morton High School District 201 Board of Education members apparently have less sense than the man who is leading them.
By an appalling 6-1 vote last month, they reappointed Jeff Pesek as their president. Recent news stories about Pesek’s close associations with criminals brought calls that he should step down from his seat.
Pesek provided testimony against a lifelong friend, Mark Polchan, in a federal trial last year. Polchan eventually was convicted of carrying out the mob-ordered bombing of a Berwyn business.
During the trial under a grant of immunity, Pesek admitted to knowing Ontourage, a nightclub he helped start with his brother, wasn’t withholding taxes from what it paid Polchan as an employee. He also said he knew the nightclub didn’t always follow the rules when it came to obtaining the liquor it sold. In addition, Pesek said he periodically bought television sets for Ontourage from Polchan’s pawn shop, which was known for selling stolen merchandise.
Government documents revealed Pesek invited self-professed drug dealer Enrique Rendon to be a silent partner in Austin Liquors, a bar and liquor store he bought in Cicero. Rendon testified it was common knowledge he was a drug dealer.
Pesek has made a living out of his associations with mob associates, gang leaders, crooks and drug dealers. Can anyone on the District 201 board explain why he deserves a leadership position in a government entity?
The brothers, by the way, have close ties to Cicero Town President Larry Dominick. Perhaps town officials should reconsider all the money the brothers are being paid from Cicero’s coffers.
Pesek has a history of exercising dismal judgment in his dealings with friends and acquaintances.
Remaining a member of the District 201 board imperils the integrity of this public body. And if he cared at all for the district, as he claims, he would resign his seat immediately.
