WHAT? Fifth Ward Alderman Theodore Polashek was lifted on the bucket of a frontloader today to hang American flags as part of a fledgling group aimed at highlighting Berwyn's patriotism called Flags for Berwyn. This year, the group hung flags to honor Labor Day and the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

SO WHAT? Polashek, along with former Third Ward Alderman Rick Toman and Department of Public Works employee John Shafran, hoped to get flags hung along Cermak Road between Lombard and Wesley avenues this week. “It’s a small sacrifice to make next to our men and women who are overseas,” Polashek added.

WHAT’S NEXT? The group hopes to continue providing fresh, clean flags along Berwyn's main streets, but Toman said that so far most of the funding for the group has come from donations from elected officials, civic groups and veterans organizations. He's hoping the city's business community also will pitch in to help keep Berwyn's patriotism prominently displayed.
