The collapse of a decorative overhang last week in the Carol Shire Commons condominium complex has prompted village officials to get involved.

“Our belief is there needs to be a more thorough and complete analysis to make sure there are no other types of problems like what occurred,” Carol Stream Village Manager Joe Breinig said.

Carol Stream Fire Protection District officials responded at about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 31 to 129 Elk Trail Court in the Carol Shire Commons condominium complex for a report of bricks falling off the building and that a balcony had collapsed. Upon arrival, fire officials found six exterior balconies had collapsed.

No one was injured, but about 10 families were displaced. The Carol Stream Village Hall was opened to provide shelter for the residents and serve as a coordination point for relief efforts. The American Red Cross also was contacted and responded to the scene.

“It literally took a village to clean it up,” Breinig said. “Fortunately no one was hurt.”

Village officials are working with the condo’s homeowner’s association to inspect other buildings in the complex and make sure measures are taken to keep residents away from the canopies as much as possible.

“We’re continuing to move forward and all signs are positive we’ll get this addressed,” Breinig said.
